When Julia Gschwind laced up her gloves as a competitive amateur boxer years ago, she wished for a place where women could train in authentic boxing technique without compromising on respect, safety or community. That gym didn't exist then. So in September 2007, she created it.

After almost two decades of coaching boxing, it still surprises me when a male boxing coach approaches me with this curious look on his face and a tone of wonder, disbelief and arrogance: “Are you a coach?” (Meanwhile, I’m obviously warming up my boxer for her match at a national qualifier amongst dozens of other coaches and boxers.)

Headstrong Girls’ Boxing improves confidence through fitness, community

Nonprofit Headstrong Girls’ Boxing, founded in 2021 by a duo from Austin Women’s Boxing Club, shapes a space for young girls to get frustration out, strengthen communication skills and find community all while staying active.

Julia Gschwind is a boxer, martial artist, coach, mother and owner of the Austin Women’s Boxing Club in South Austin. Julia was also the San Francisco Golden Gloves Champion in 2000. After years of competing, she is now building a community of strong, powerful and confident female boxers she wished she’d had in the beginning of her career.
