How did you get involved with AWBC?
I had always been fascinated by boxing and was getting bored of years of running. I met a former AWBC coach at a party who told me about AWBC. I stopped in with my then 5 year old daughter (10 years ago?!) and met Julia. She showed me around the gym and there was even a play area for kids way back then. I absolutely loved (and still do!) the challenging work-outs, coaches and community. My daughter even ended up doing many years of Kajukenbo and teen boxing.
What’s your favorite part about being a member?
I love the connection...and disconnection! I've made many wonderful connections with members over the years, some who have moved away but still keep in touch over social media. The community and coaches are very encouraging. Disconnection because it is my favorite way to disconnect from daily stress and just focus on what is directly in front of me. I can turn my brain off, be present and punch!!
What’s your favorite punch or combo?
1-1-2
Do you have a favorite pro boxer or martial artist?
I used to live near George Foreman and went to school with some of his kids. I never met him but his grill can cook a mean turkey burger!
What do you do outside of boxing? Are you a student? Do you work?
I have been a teacher for about a million years. The past 3 years I have been a special education/dyslexia teacher. I love it and learn more every year. Even some of my students go to AWBC!
Any hobbies or passion projects?
I was a foster parent for a year and a half to two amazing kiddos that I still get to see regularly. Since then my wife and I volunteer with Austin Angels - a nonprofit that supports foster parents. I also love anything art/crafts, live music, new restaurants, and binging shows with my family and pets.
What's your "walkout song?"
"We're Not Gonna Take It" - Twisted Sister
Can you give us two of your favorite musical artists and two of your favorite music genres to work out to?
Blink 182 and Eminem. I love anything 90's alternative and anything fast and punk rock.
How has AWBC changed your life?
AWBC is my favorite way to exercise, learn, stay healthy and de-stress. I have never left a class more stressed out than when I started! Through the years AWBC has made me stronger - mind, body, spirit. :)
