How did you get involved with AWBC?
I joined when moving back to ATX in '21. I wanted to not just workout but to learn a skill. In addition, a family member loved to box, so it was also a way of connecting to them.
In the course of attending AWBC, that family member was diagnosed with dementia, rendering them unable to continue boxing.
So, this is a way of honoring them, continuing to feel that personal connection and boxing is challenging cognitively, which is proven to help with mental decline.
What’s your favorite part about being a member?
I enjoy being a part of a strong community of interesting, intelligent and funny badasses.
Every week is a new skill development, literally keeping me on my (back) toes. One week I'll feel like "I'm not the worst!" And the next we have to switch to non-orthodox stance, rendering me incapable of telling my right from my left.
Humble Brags:
-I can always make Coach Julia laugh by demo'ing a new jumprope "trick," which frankly is a huge win.
-I'm the reigning champion of Dragon Tails.
What’s your favorite punch or combo?
I like the symmetry of a 2-3-2.
Do you have a favorite pro boxer or martial artist?
I just want everyone to have a good time.
What do you do outside of boxing? Are you a student? Do you work?
I work in tech in Trust & Safety, focusing on child safety.
Any hobbies or passion projects?
I enjoy reading, as evident by all the books I've won in the silent auction. I have an old man dog named Bogie, whom I'm just as obsessed as when he was a puppy. I enjoy van trips/camping with my wife.
What’s your “walkout song?”
"Ray of Light" by Madonna
How has AWBC changed your life?
My workouts are focused on being healthy longterm. As mentioned, this form of exercise will help me stay mentally sharp. I also make sure to attend the weight lifting classes offered, as it's incredibly important as women age to keep up our muscle mass.Having this community has expanded my social life and I hope to have these folks in my life for a long time (if they'll let me).
